Wedding Gift Idea: The Good Housekeeping Cookbook (1973)
The Good Housekeeping Cookbook (1973) should be on every newlywed couple’s bookshelf and every engaged couple’s wish list. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or a novice, you’ll find something useful in this cookbook. I received my used copy about ten years ago, and I still refer to it from time to time.
This cookbook, with 811 pages, seems to have every element of food preparation and entertaining covered. The book explains cooking terminology, styles of food preparation, various spices and when to use them. Also, the cookbook contains recipes for meats, rice and pasta, cakes and frostings, and more. If you need to know about cooking outdoors, cooking for two, or cooking for a crowd, you’ll find information about those topics in chapters with those names.
The chapter I refer to frequently is the “Vegetables” chapter. This chapter names the various vegetables and tells you when they’re in season, how to purchase and store them, and how to cook them. Information about which seasonings to use when cooking specific vegetables is included in this cookbook, too.
I own several cookbooks, but The Good Housekeeping Cookbook proves to be the most useful and not necessarily for the recipes. This cookbook’s information about cooking in general makes it worth owning and a valuable resource for every young couple.
